Top Tips to Stay Pain Free. Back Care Advice
- Take regular breaks
You should have a break of 10-15 minutes every hour. Your body needs time to recover from prolonged sitting and/or computer use, so you must get up from your desk. Set a reminder to come up on your computer every hour to prompt you.
- Eat a healthy diet including breakfast
Eating a balanced diet helps your body and skeleton remain healthy. It also helps it to recover from any damage that prolonged sitting can cause. Breakfast should not be skipped and should be more than just a muffin and a skinny latte.

- Remain hydrated
If you are dehydrated, you are not as productive at work and are more susceptible to pain and dysfunction in your body’s structure.
- Be disciplined to use your ergonomic equipment properly
We tend to work in a certain way, sit in a certain way all day every day. The best chair in the world will not make you sit well, so you have to work with your environment too. A regular reminder that pops up on your computer to ‘sit up straight’ can be very helpful.
- Stop smoking
Enough said!
- Stand more at work
Varying postural positions helps your body fight the causes of aches and pains. Find somewhere that you can stand to do some parts of your job – such as reading documents. Stand to answer the phone.
- Take regular exercise
This means more than the walk to work. Raise your heart rate with more vigorous exercise 2 – 3 times a week and sustain that heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes each time. The fitter you are, the better you can withstand the rigours of work.
